Opening — The Problem with Whole House Sourcing for Families
Renovating a family home is fundamentally different from renovating a couple's apartment or a professional's studio. A family home needs to work for adults and children simultaneously, often in adjacent spaces. The kitchen has to handle serious cooking and children's homework at the same table. The living room has to be a comfortable adult space that a seven-year-old doesn't destroy. And the children's rooms need to genuinely serve children — not just look good in a rendering.
This London villa project for a family of five was built around that challenge. Every room was designed for the specific person or people who would use it most — and the result is a home where the French Nordic design language is consistent, but the function of each space is entirely its own.
The Adults' Kitchen: Where the Family Actually Lives
The kitchen and dining area is the room a family uses most, and it is the room where the difference between custom furniture and catalogue furniture is most visible over time.
The custom kitchen cabinet system uses matte white upper cabinets with recessed panel detailing — a choice that reads as clean and contemporary while referencing traditional French country cabinetry — above natural oak grain lower cabinets that bring warmth and handle the inevitable marks and bumps of daily family use better than painted finishes.
Open oak display shelving replaces wall cabinets on the coffee and small appliance side. This is a practical decision for a family kitchen: open shelving means everyday items are accessible without opening and closing cabinet doors dozens of times a day. The slight visual complexity of displayed items is a fair trade for the functional ease.
The chalkboard wall panel between the kitchen and dining area is the most family-specific detail in the entire project. Grocery lists, children's drawings, weekly meal plans, reminders — the chalkboard earns its place in a family home in a way it would not in a professional's apartment.
Above the long solid oak dining table, two oversized woven rattan pendant lamps add the natural texture that ties the kitchen to the project's broader French Nordic material palette.

The Reading Room: For the Adults Who Need to Disappear
The double-height living room with its floor-to-ceiling library wall is the room for the adults in the family — specifically designed as a space where grown-ups can genuinely retreat.
The custom library wall in natural oak with white panel backing rises to the full ceiling height, with a rolling brass-rail ladder providing access to the upper shelves. Books, objects and plants fill the shelving — the kind of curated personal collection that only develops over years and that a room like this is built to accommodate and display.
The curved cream sofa below is deliberately scaled for adult proportions — low enough to feel relaxed, firm enough for long reading sessions. The exposed wooden ceiling beams overhead reinforce the French country atmosphere.
This room has no dedicated children's furniture. That is a design decision, not an oversight: the library is the parents' room, and its calm, book-filled atmosphere communicates that clearly without a sign on the door.

The Master Bedroom: Rest, Finally
After the activity of the kitchen and the intellectual engagement of the library, the master bedroom is designed for one purpose: rest.
The custom rattan panel wardrobe in oak frame runs the full length of the wall opposite the bed. The rattan texture absorbs light rather than reflecting it — keeping the room visually calm even when the wardrobe occupies a dominant proportion of the wall surface.
The wood veneer headboard panel and floating bedside units are deliberately simple. No LED lighting in this room — just warm ambient light from the bedside lamps and the natural light from the window. The upholstered bench at the foot of the bed provides a place to sit and remove shoes — a practical detail that signals the room transition from active to restful.

The Secondary Bedroom: For the Guest Who Stays a Week
The secondary bedroom is designed for extended stays — the kind of guest who needs more than a hotel-room experience. The Japanese-influenced reading nook in the window bay addresses this directly: a custom low platform seating area with cushions, a low oval solid wood coffee table and floor cushions creates a comfortable daytime space that a guest can actually use for hours.
The bed zone is calm and well-proportioned, with fabric headboard and matching rattan-finish bedside units providing consistent material language with the rest of the house. The secondary bedroom feels like a considered room — not a room that exists because there was space left over.

The Children's Adventure Bedroom: For the Kids Who Need Space to Move
The children's bedroom is the most technically complex room in the project and the one the clients were most excited about. The brief was explicit: make it a room that takes the children's need for physical activity seriously.
The result is a fully custom adventure play structure built into the room's primary wall. A slide runs from an elevated sleeping loft — accessed by integrated stair steps — to the main floor level. The loft structure features a circular porthole window cutout and an arched opening at the base, references to the playhouse aesthetic that children recognise and respond to. Ceiling-mounted swing rails with clear acrylic brackets suspend a swing in front of the loft opening.
On the opposite wall, a full-height custom climbing wall panel with integrated holds and perforated backing provides a vertical physical challenge. The perforated backing also functions as a pinboard — the children's drawings and photos attached directly to the same surface they use for climbing.
Below the loft, a warm oak open cubby storage unit at child height keeps toys, books and small items organised at a scale children can actually manage themselves.
The entire room uses cream, white and warm oak — a deliberately calm palette so the play structure reads as the room's single visual statement. No bright primary colours, no character licensing, no design decisions that the children will outgrow in two years.
